Dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, Mother of Jesus Christ.

The church dates from the 12th century. "Arches" possibly derives from an arched thoroughfare outside the church in medieval times. It has been much altered and renovated over the centuries. It survived the bombing of Exeter in 1942 but suffered severe damage due to fire.

St Mary Arches is the home of Unlimited Church, the youth church of the Diocese of Exeter. It is also used at weekends as a base for the Street Pastors and other support agencies. The church is only occasionally open for visitors.
